Before the Europeans came to French Guiana it belonged to the Carib, Arawk, Emerillor, Galibi, Palikour and Wajampi. These were all Native American groups. French Guiana was first settled by the French in 1604.

French Guiana is located in the northeastern cost of South America. It contains two main regions: a coastal strip where most of the people live, and rainforest which rises all the way to the Tumac-Humac mountains. Three islands are found off the coast as well. There is also a dam called the Barrage de Petit-Saut. This dam produces hydroelectricity.

French Guiana does not have the best soil. Their soil is low in nutrients and organic matter. Two things they try to do is lime the soil and the slash and burn tactic. This contributes minerals and other nutrients to soil.

In 2008 the GDP of French Guiana was US$4.72 billion. French Guiana had the 11th largest economy in South America. They are heavily dependent on mainland France for goods, subsidies and trades. Also there is very little manufacturing in French Guiana.

In 2009 the population of French Guiana was 229,000 people. The people in French Guiana are very ethnically diverse.
French Guiana is part of the European Union. The president of France chooses a prefect. A prefect is the one who will rule the country. Politics is dominated by the Guianese Socialist Party.
Transportation:
The main international airport for French Guiana is th Cayenne-Rochambeau Airport. This is located in the suburb of Cayenne. Everyday there are two flights to Paris. As for driving, there are asphalted roads.
